About SHAPE

Founded in 2025, SHAPE emerged from the Sleep Sustainability Task Force, a clinician-led initiative dedicated to advancing environmental sustainability in sleep medicine without compromising patient care. From its inception, the organization has focused on understanding and reducing the environmental and economic footprint of sleep diagnostics and therapies, while aligning innovation, policy, and stewardship toward a sustainable future for sleep healthcare.

Our Mission

  • Support and disseminate high-quality research that quantifies environmental impact and evaluates mitigation strategies in sleep medicine
  • Develop educational resources, including webinars, conference sessions and publications, to promote the implementation of sustainable practices in routine clinical, laboratory, and operational decision-making in sleep healthcare
  • Encourage the collaboration of sleep clinicians, researchers, and industry partners to reduce the carbon footprint and waste production of sleep medicine practices
  • Support advocacy initiatives related to the impacts of climate change on sleep health

Dr. Timothy I. Morgenthaler is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He served as Director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine from 2016 to 2024 and is a past President of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, where he received the Nathaniel Kleitman Distinguished Service Award for contributions to the field. He currently serves as Vice Chair for Quality at Mayo Clinic, focusing on systems that advance safe, reliable, high-value, patient-centered care. As a founding member of SHAPE, Dr. Morgenthaler seeks to help the sleep medicine community pursue practical approaches that integrate environmental stewardship with clinical excellence, operational discipline, and better outcomes for patients.

Dr. Donahue is an Assistant Professor of Sleep Medicine at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. She has been involved in healthcare sustainability research for ten years and has published multiple studies applying life cycle analysis (LCA) and waste audit methodologies to various areas within healthcare.

She is passionate about carbon footprint and waste reduction through circular economic approaches to the sleep medicine supply chain.

Teofilo L. Lee-Chiong Jr., MD is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, and Tenured Professor of Medicine at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado. He joined Philips Respironics as its Chief Medical Liaison in 2011. He has authored or edited over 30 textbooks in Sleep Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. He is the recipient of the 2012 American Academy of Sleep Medicine Excellence in Education Award.

Her clinical and research interests focus on advancing sleep health equity by promoting recognition and management of obstructive sleep apnea in underrepresented populations.
